More than seven centuries of history

Brinsop Court's story stretches back more than seven centuries, though traces of its past reach even further. The oldest parts of the Manor House date to the early 1300s, built on medieval foundations by the Tirrell family, whose connection to Brinsop can be traced back to the early 13th century. Long before the estate became the house we know today, it was protected by a moat and drawbridge, with records referencing a chapel, crypt, forge, and dungeon. The ancient beams within the Banqueting Hall have even been carbon-dated to around 1180, while local folklore tells of Norman settlers and dragons roaming the land.

From the 15th century onwards, Brinsop was home to the influential Dansey family for more than 500 years. Their legacy can still be seen throughout the house, from elegant architectural additions to stained-glass windows commemorating a visit from King Charles I. During the English Civil War, Brinsop found itself at the centre of national events, changing hands between Royalist and Parliamentary forces and serving as a temporary military headquarters.

Over the centuries, Brinsop Court has welcomed an extraordinary cast of residents and guests. Poet William Wordsworth stayed here in the winter of 1827, finding inspiration among the estate's peaceful surroundings, while generations later Professor Stephen Hawking hosted annual scientific workshops within its walls. In the early 20th century, Hubert Astley and Lady Constance Sutton reshaped the estate, adding the east wing and creating the courtyard layout seen today. Later, actress Madeleine Carroll, then one of Hollywood's brightest stars, brought a touch of glamour to Brinsop, even introducing flamingos to the grounds. Through changing owners, world events, and centuries of evolution, Brinsop Court has remained a place of gathering, creativity, and connection.

A historic estate, reimagined

Since 2005, Brinsop Court has been lovingly cared for by owners Martin and Pat Churchward, whose vision has been to preserve the estate's remarkable heritage while creating an exceptional experience for modern guests.

Today, the manor house is a Grade I listed building, while the historic bridge crossing the moat holds Grade II listed status. Around every corner, the estate's history reveals itself in ornate ceilings, mullioned windows, ancient beams, sweeping staircases, and grand fireplaces, each contributing to the character that makes Brinsop Court so distinctive.

Careful restoration has ensured these original features remain at the heart of the house. Across each of the four wings, interiors have been thoughtfully refreshed, with colour, texture, and comfort introduced in ways that complement rather than compete with the building's heritage. The result is a house that feels both timeless and welcoming and a place where centuries of history sit effortlessly alongside modern comforts.

Today, Brinsop Court is one of the UK's leading exclusive-use estates, hosting weddings, private celebrations, corporate retreats, filming projects, and memorable countryside stays, while continuing a story that has been unfolding for more than 700 years.
